Southern Eye Center Provides the Gift of Sight

The Southern Eye Center team is committed to giving back to their community. Dr. Lynn McMahan, Founder of Southern Eye Center, began a program called Gift of Sight to help patients in and around Hattiesburg who needed eye surgery but simply could not afford it. Optometrists and local eye care providers refer their cataract patients; after certain criteria are met, a surgeon at Southern Eye Center performs the cataract surgeries on Valentine’s Day each year.

Dr. Kiper Nelson provided the gift of sight to Belinda Gilmore on Make a Difference Day.

When National Make a Difference Day was instituted throughout the country, Dr. McMahan added a second Gift of Sight day each year in October and changed the name to Make a Difference Day. This year’s Make a Difference Day is scheduled for October 31, 2014 . Dr. Kiper Nelson will perform cataract surgeries for patients referred by local doctors. Though the majority of patients are referred for cataract surgery, Southern Eye Center has fellowship-trained physicians in multiple eye care specialties.

In 2003, Southern Eye Center and Dr. Nelson were awarded one of ten National Make a Difference Day Awards recognizing their outstanding efforts in helping those in need. SEC was also awarded the Mississippi Governor’s Give Award, and Dr. McMahan was given a citation from the Mississippi House of Representatives for his dedication to providing eye care to underprivileged individuals.
