What is the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay?
Raindrop is a tiny transparent disc called an inlay. It’s made of approximately 80% water and from similar material to a soft contact lens. The inlay, about the size of a pinhead, is placed just beneath the surface of your non-dominant eye in a 10-minute outpatient procedure.
The inlay gently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear front portion of the eye. It is bioengineered to facilitate the transport of nutrients and fluid to the eye. The Raindrop Inlay has a 2mm diameter and is 3 times thinner than a sheet of printer paper.
The Raindrop Near Vision Inlay received U.S. FDA approval in June of 2016 and has been available around the world for several years prior to approval in the U.S.
The Raindrop Inlay is inserted in the non-dominant eye, allowing the eyes to work together for clear vision up close and at a distance. It works by gently changing the shape of the cornea in the implanted eye.
The Raindrop Near Vision Inlay procedure takes only about 10 minutes and our Southern Eye Center surgeons perform it in our office. During the procedure, you will be awake and alert. Your surgeon will use a laser to create a small flap in the surface of the eye (cornea). The Raindrop Inlay is then placed within the opening.
What to Expect Immediately Following the Procedure:
Most patients are able to resume normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. You should avoid using reading glasses and keep all follow-up appointments with the doctor. Be sure to take all prescribed medications, including artificial tears to avoid developing dry eye. The Raindrop Inlay can be safely removed if necessary.
As with any surgical procedure, it is critical to follow your doctor’s instructions, even during the recovery phase. Vision improvement and healing time can be different for everyone. Most patients who have had Raindrop gain 5 lines of near vision on an eye chart without the need for reading glasses within one week. And their vision continues to improve for several weeks.
