November is Diabetes Awareness Month. This is a disease that affects nearly 26-million people in the United States including hundreds of thousands in Mississippi. When it comes to diabetic eye disease, there are many facts to share.
“Diabetes is also the leading cause of blindness in middle-aged adults in the United States,” Jaime Jiménez, M.D., said. Dr. Jiménez specializes in Vitreoretinal and Diabetes at Southern Eye Center, and he serves as a board member for the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi. “See your eye care professional at least once a year for a dilated eye exam.”
Jaime Jimenez, M.D. is a renowned ophthalmologist and a well-respected surgeon in the fields of Retinal Disorders and Glaucoma. He is the former Assistant Chief of Ophthalmology at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi where he received an Air Force Commendation Medal. He is Board Certified and a fellowship-trained in Vitreoretinal and Diabetes. Recently, Dr. Jimenez led a seminar on Glaucoma treatment for a group of local optometrists at a Southern Eye Center continuing education event.
The Southern Eye Center team is committed to giving back to their community. Dr. Lynn McMahan, Founder of Southern Eye Center, began a program called Gift of Sight to help patients in and around Hattiesburg who needed eye surgery but simply could not afford it. Optometrists and local eye care providers refer their cataract patients; after certain criteria are met, a surgeon at Southern Eye Center performs the cataract surgeries on Valentine’s Day each year.
United States Senator Roger Wicker visited the Southern Eye Center on Thursday, October 2. One of the primary points of emphasis for the Senator, who has served the State of Mississippi since December of 2007, was the concern for small businesses in Hattiesburg.

Southern Eye Center is now offering cosmetic services at the new Lotus Spa
Stan Saulny, M.D., fellowship trained oculoplastic surgeon at Southern Eye Center is now offering cosmetic services such as Botox, Juvéderm, and Latisse at the new and upcoming Lotus Spa located in the heart of downtown Hattiesburg. Dr. Saulny is a graduate of Harvard Medical School, completed a residency in ophthalmology at UCLA, followed by a fellowship in Facial and Cosmetic Oculoplastic Surgery. Dr. Saulny has over a decade of experience in cosmetic surgery and cosmetic injections.

For decades, Southern Eye Center has held an annual Gift of Sight Day and this year the tradition will continue. There are many people who simply fall through the cracks when it comes to receiving affordable medical treatment. Any patient in South Mississippi who is uninsured and unable to pay may be able to have their vision corrected at no cost.
