Southern Eye Center’s Founding Father Leaves a Legacy for Colleagues and Patients Alike

Southern Eye Center enjoys a rich heritage in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and the surrounding communities it serves. For decades, the surgeons and doctors at Southern Eye Center have earned and kept the trust of countless area residents. The practice has invested in its community – serving and assisting countless individuals and organizations over the years.

A great deal of Southern Eye Center’s success is due to the efforts of its founder Lynn McMahan, MD. Dr. McMahan’s recent retirement after more than 30 years in practice offers an opportunity to look a little more closely at his outstanding career and accomplishments in the field of ophthalmology.

During the course of his career, Dr. McMahan has lectured on four continents and published more than 60 national articles in his field. He has received recognition for his work from the National Council of the American Board of Ophthalmology among others. But he is most proud of his work with Gift of Sight, an organization he founded that is dedicated to providing eye care procedures to underprivileged individuals for which he was awarded the Mississippi Governor’s Give Award and a citation from the Mississippi House of Representatives.

“I’ve tried to think of my life in another profession or job,” said Dr. McMahan, at his career celebration last month. “I really can’t imagine anything that could have given me the happiness and feeling of satisfaction that I have enjoyed as a cataract surgeon. How many jobs are there that allow you to literally change people’s lives in mere minutes with little or no discomfort? How many other jobs daily get hugs and grateful thanks not just once but several times each day? I couldn’t even come up with one.”

Dr. McMahan leaves a rich heritage of excellence, service and compassionate care that have become the hallmark of Southern Eye Center. “My career has been both exciting and rewarding,” he said. “I was privileged to be part of a team that achieved successes that we can all be proud of.”

The team at Southern Eye Center wishes Dr. McMahan all the best!
