Cataracts & Astigmatism
Correcting Cataracts & Astigmatism // Toric Lens Technology
Astigmatism is a result of the cornea being irregularly shaped; more like a football than a baseball. This irregularity results in blurry or even double vision. In the past, cataract and lens replacement surgeries were unable to correct astigmatism. Patients with astigmatism required either additional surgery, such as LASIK, or special prescription glasses or contacts.
Thanks to the technological development of the Toric Intraocular Lens (IOL), however, this is no longer the case.
The Toric IOL replaces the natural lens and is permanently fixed within the eye. The unique shape of the lens creates a reduction and possible elimination of astigmatism, and also results in clear distance vision. Patients with Toric IOLs may still need to wear reading glasses.
If you or a family member suffer from astigmatism, a Toric IOL may be your ideal solution. The experienced team of fellowship-trained cataract surgeons at Southern Eye Center is available to discuss your unique concerns in more detail and suggest those options most suited to your vision needs and your lifestyle.
