There are many people who simply fall through the cracks when it comes to receiving affordable medical treatment.  Any patient in South Mississippi who is uninsured and unable to pay may be able to have their vision corrected at no cost. Southern Eye Center has fellowship trained eye surgeons who perform eye procedures from cataract removal, corneal transplants, glaucoma procedures, retinal detachments, to eyelid procedures.  This year’s Gift of Sight day will be held on February 15th.

Insurance companies are now approving Intacs for the treatment of Keratoconus – Intacs are prescription corneal inserts that are inserted into the tissue of the cornea (the clear, front surface of the eye) to treat Keratoconus, a disease that creates a thinning of the cornea and can result in loss of vision. The procedure, which has been performed at Southern Eye Center for more than 10 years, offers a way to stabilize the cornea and restore vision, often preventing the need for a corneal transplant. While corneal transplants are very successful and the number one transplant performed, Intacs offer a much quicker recovery time and is less invasive than a corneal transplant.

 All Intacs procedures at Southern Eye Center are performed by fellowship-trained corneal surgeon, Dr. Cameron Griffith.

Southern Eye Center, the Pine Belt’s only multi-subspecialty ophthalmology practice with full time retina surgeons, will be presenting to local area optometrists on diseases of the retina. Dr. Jaime Jiménez will give a presentation on the latest advancements in Intravitreal (injection) therapy for conditions such as wet macular degeneration and uveitis. Dr. Abumere Akinwale will present on the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness in individuals from 35 – 60 years old.

Dr. Akinwale joins Dr. Jiménez at Southern Eye Center as a Retina Surgeon, having received her medical degree from the University of Mississippi. She completed her residency at Boston University Medical Center and completed a fellowship in vitreo-retinal diseases at Harvard Medical School. Together, Dr. Akinwale and Dr. Jiménez will treat patients with vitreo-retinal disorders such as diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, vascular disorders and retinal detachments.
